The first works on this site were created in Thornhill, Galloway, during the lockdown in April and May 2020.

The forms and ideas ideas were developed from an earlier series of pieces that used scientific 'boundary' data as a starting point, invisible zones revealed by flight technology, that were digitally converted into line drawings and used as working templates. recent series have been based on observation of fluctuating boundary zones on the Solway coast.

The material used is reclaimed sandstone, gathered originally to create a commission for a charity auction. One of the challenges set after moving to Thornhill from London was to use a traditional local material rather than the manufactured materials I had used in my work before.

Locharbriggs Sandstone was formed during the early Permian when Scotland was close to the equator and desert-like conditions prevailed. The stone gets its colour from iron oxide coating the grains of quartz, and often includes dark banding from clay minerals deposited as the beds were formed.
